On the territory of the United States of America, thanks to, as a rule, dog breeding clubs and organizations engaged in dog breeding, a classification has developed that unites certain breeds of dogs into a "working group" or type, based on their type of activity. There are seven such types in total.

We suggest considering this typology in more detail.
The first type is service dogs or guide dogs - these are service dogs specially trained to help people with disabilities. A true service dog is trained to behave well in any situation, so it can accompany a person anywhere. This type includes: guide dogs for the blind (Guide Dogs); mobility assistance dogs (Mobility Assistance Dogs); dogs for the deaf (Hearing Dogs); psychiatric service dogs (Psychiatric Service Dogs); dogs that notify about a change in the level of hypoglycemia (Diabetic Alert Dogs); Seizure Response Dogs (e.g. seizure response dogs); dogs providing support to people with autism spectrum disorders (Autism Support Dogs); and dogs that determine the presence of allergens (Allergy Detection Dogs).

It should be noted separately that therapy dogs are dogs emotional support do not belong to this type of service dogs. The following breeds are usually used for such work: Labrador, Golden Retriever, Standard Poodle and German Shepherd.

Therapy dogs are the next type. Animal-assisted therapy involves the use of trained, certified animals as part of a patient's therapeutic recovery plan. Together with canine experts, they can also visit schools and kindergartens to help illustrate the story of a person for children. The history of therapy dogs dates back to 1976, when Elaine Smith noticed positive trends in patients suffering from mental disorders who were in contact with a golden retriever.

The next type of service dog includes almost the most famous police dogs. These dogs, often referred to as K-9s, are specially trained to assist police and other law enforcement agencies in the performance of their duties. Police dogs protect their handlers and can pursue and apprehend criminal suspects who are trying to escape or hide. In some cases, K-9s can be trained to detect certain substances by scent, but these dogs can also be classified as detection dogs. In many countries around the world, harming or killing a police dog is a criminal offence. The most common dog breeds used as police officers are German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois.
